​Ext.define in use is typically based on assigning a CLASS and/or METHOD to an instance of it. This key allows Ext JS to mimic the behavior of defining a CLASS/METHOD at the module level of a class.
Ext.define’s ultimate purpose is to provide a simplistic way to modify the behavior of a CLASS/METHOD at the instance level of a CLASS. Using this technique is much more flexible than the previous method of directly assigning the CLASS or METHOD to a global variable. It allows user’s to change the behavior of a CLASS/METHOD directly in an instance-specific manner.
Assume the following in a CLASS:

this.doSomething();
},
 doSomething: function(){
return ‘test’;
}
});

…where doSomething() is a simple example of how we wish to access and use the CLASS/METHODs.  If we were to make modifications to the CLASS definition that did not include METHOD and CLASS explicitly, there would be no way to access and change the CLASS or METHOD while in a test case that could have a CLASS/METHOD assigned to it.
Using Ext.define(‘MyClass’, { init: function(){ this.doSomething(); }, doSomething: function(){ return ‘test’; } }); makes the assumption that we wanted to access and use doSomething() from a CLASS definition while in a test case that could have a CLASS/METHOD assigned to it.  So if we ever wanted to change the CLASS definition to instead use a METHOD name other than doSomething()…say instead it was called callSomething()…it would not work.  We would have to edit the CLASS definition to explicitly use METHOD to reference it.
If we were to use Ext.define(‘MyClass’, { init: function(){ this.callSomething(); }, callSomething: function(){ return ‘test’; } }); then this is how we could access and change the CLASS/METHOD at the instance level.  We can call it directly in a CLASS/METHOD definition, in a test case that could have a CLASS
